Fitzhugh was a Richmond,Virginia City Police Officer.He at one time had a beat on west Clay and west Leigh Streets.At that period in time it was an all white section of town.In the summer time when the temperatures were high ,people that had made home brew, were reveled by the blowing up of their beer bottles that were hidden illegally within their homes.Fitzhugh would hear the explosion and go for the arrest.He also was known to travel the alleys in the neighborhood and find a freshly covered over hole in the dirt, which when uncovered, would reveal a hidden bottle of moonshine liquor.This being illegal,He would make an arrest.Because of His methods of apprehension He became known as" Sneeky Pete".In the later years of his time on the police force, He worked the school crossing at Highland Park School.He would help the children through the traffic to the sidewalk on the other side of the street.When I came across He would always pat Me on the seat and joke with Me.When He retired,which was when I was in grade school,the school held a special assembly for Him and presented Him with a piece of luggage in recognition Of His long service to the students of the school.They all loved Him and as Myself,looked forward to seeing Him every school morning.Fitzhugh in his thoughtfulness,would come and get all of My Daddy's children in the summer time,after His death,and take us to Bryant Park for a picnic.SADY would have fixed a picnic basket with plenty of goodies for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it.I remember on one such occasion after everyone had gotten in His car but Him ,I was standing behind His seat with My hand around the door post, He did not know it and shut the door on My hand.A little ice water poured over My hand revived Me for a pleasant day.I have always loved black eye peas and when I was a child, He would ask Me what I wanted to eat and I would tell Him I wanted Blackim Peas and stewed tomatoes .He never forgot it and for the rest of his life, when we met, He would ask Me what I wanted to eat just to hear Me say Blackim Peas.I loved Him very much and was very proud of Him.During the latter part of His life He and Sady took care of His sister Rosa in their home she had mental problems.Her husband had died and they had no children.He would carry Her down the steps in the morning and up every night every day till she died.Sady died before Fitzhugh,She had the flu and did not recover.During Her illiness She had a nurse whose name was Clara.After Sady's death Fitzhugh married Her.She had a home in Mineral ,Virginia and they sold Fitzhugh's home on Cilff Avenue and went to live in Her home.In Fitzhugh's final days He became incapacitated and She put Him in a nursing home at Lousia Court House.She moved to Her sons home in Lovingston,Virginia.Fitzhugh died in the nursing home and I never heard from Clara again.After putting Fitzhugh in the nursing home Clara had a yard sale and sold all of the Hand Made Cherry Furniture that had belonged to Sady and Fitzhugh.
